A two-month-old baby boy who was suspected to have been buried alive by the mother has been miraculously rescued.

The baby was found buried in the early hours of Wednesday at Bantuma Akyinim, a suburb of Elmina in the K.E.E.A. municipality.

According to Mr. Peter Ampah, an eyewitness and a leader in the rescue effort, they had gone to offload concrete blocks onto a plot of land which was being developed when one of his men alerted them of what he had seen in the ground. One of the arms of the baby was spotted sticking up from a shallow sand pit.

“He went over there to urinate and started shouting that he had seen something strange in the ground. We followed up and to our amazement, we found the arm of a baby in the ground”, he narrated.

They mustered courage to dig him out. “The baby’s mouth and ears were filled with sand and had ants crawling all over his body. He looked pale. His breathing and heart rate were slow”, Mr. Ampah added.

After digging out the baby, he was washed and sent to the Elmina Urban Health Center for treatment. Health officials at the facility after stabilizing his condition said the baby was not out of danger and therefore made arrangement for onward referral to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The matter has been reported to the Elmina Police for further investigation.
