C/R police ready to fight crime

Cape Coast, March 30, GNA - The Central Regional Police Commander, Mr Albert Onwona-Agyeman, on Tuesday, assured the public that his outfit has put in place a number of measures to fight crime, particularly armed robbery in the region.

He said for some time now, the region has had upsurge of armed robberies, especially on market days, around Mankessim and Agona Swedru and that the police has, as a result, intensified day and night patrols to help curb the situation.

Mr Onwona-Agyeman, who gave the assurance during a press briefing at Cape Coast, called on the media to cooperate and support the police in their duties to enable them work more effectively.

The press briefing was to tell the media personnel efforts being made by his outfit to track down a group of armed robbers, who attacked two households in Cape Coast in the early hours of Easter Sunday. The robbers, seriously injured a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, and also attacked his landlord and his family, and made away with four mobile phones, a total amount of 4.2 million cedis, in addition to some jewellery.

They also attacked another house and made away with some money and other items.

The regional police commander, stressed the need for the public, to join in the fight against crime, particularly armed robbery, since the "armed robbers in the country out number the police, and had more sophiscated equipment for their operations".

The regional commander advised the public to give the police the right directions to locations in case there was an emergency and assured them that more policemen would be put on standby, for emergency. He however, advised the public not to attempt to fight armed robbers when they attack, since they are usually well armed and would not hesitate to harm or kill their victims.
