The Nayiri, Na Bohugu Mahami Abbulai Sheriga, President of the Northern Region House of Chiefs, has appealed to all chiefs in the North specially those serving in the judicial committees to take responsibility of addressing the witch camps issue in the Northern Region.
He said there was the need for Chiefs and other traditional rulers in the region to collaborate effectively to mitigate the sufferings of the alleged witches and wizards in the various Witches Camps in the Region.
The Na Sheriga made the appeal in Tamale on Tuesday during the Northern Regional House of Chiefs annual general meeting aimed at deliberating on problems and successes confronting the chieftaincy institution and to seek for ways of addressing the myriad of problems affecting the Region.
The event was also meant to dispatch the business strategy for the implementation of the planned activities towards next year.
He said the House through its development committee was working closely with partners in crafting modalities in dealing with conflicts and other social, economic and political problems in the Region.
He urged all Chiefs in the Region to impress on their subjects to assist the security agencies to protect the environment by desisting from the practice of bush burning for non-existing bush meat.
Na Sheriga also advised the government to take the necessary steps to fight corruption in order to restore public confidence in the institutions in the country.
He urged the security agencies to be on the lookout for people who may want to cause trouble during the Christmas and the New Year festive occasions especially in the Northern region.
Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Northern Regional Minister, in a speech read on his behalf called on the Chiefs in the Region to support government to create the necessary congenial atmosphere for peace and development.
“I would continue to pledge my unflinching support to Traditional Authorities to harness and channel our collaborative efforts into productive ventures for the benefit of the citizenry,” he said.
