Court fines 11 people GHC16,200 for flouting sanitation laws

The Ashaiman Circuit Court presided over by His Honour Gabriel Marte-Teye has slapped eight individuals and two owners of manufacturing companies in Kpone Katamanso Municipality with a fine of GHC 16,100 for committing environmental and sanitation offences.

The convicts pleaded guilty and the court accordingly pronounced its judgement, under the Public Health Act 2012 Act 851 and Criminal Code 1960.

The convicts are Selassie Kluvetsey, Suleiman Kassim, Godslove Ametepey, Gabriel Sedajor, Hajia Adisa and Robert Bugbadey.

The rest are Managing Director of Apollo Steal Company, Proprietor of Dolly Industries, Borsheba Amoako(driver), Joseph Siaw Addo, and Henry Ofori Kumah.

For their offense, Borsheba Amoako, who is the driver was charged with washing his vehicle on the road despite several warnings from the Sanitation Department of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly while the Proprietor of Dolly Industries and MD of Apollo Steal were charged with creating unsanitary conditions in their premises.

The other convicts were charged with dumping refuse at unauthorized places in the Ashaiman Municipality.

With the exception of the MD of Apollo Steal and the Proprietor of Dolly Industries who were fined GHC2,700, the rest were fined GHC 1,200 each.

Henry Ofori Kumah could not pay his fine and has since been in Ashaiman police custody.

Speaking to Oman FM, Ashaiman Municipal Sanitation Prosecutor Kartey George stated that his outfit will continue to arrest residents who flout sanitation and environmental laws and prosecute them since they are recalcitrant and lawless.

He said the assembly had sensitized them enough to adhere to the laws and so if they are not compliant, then the only way out is to prosecute them.
