Court fines goat thief

Asamankese (E/R), Nov. 25, GNA - Kwadwo Darkwa, a farmer, who stole a goat valued at 150,000 cedis, has been fined two million cedis by the Asamankese Circuit Court on Thursday.

Darkwa pleaded guilty and will serve 18 months' imprisonment in default. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector G. D. Bruce, said one Madam Comfort Kankam, had a goat pen in her house at Nkwantanan, near Kade, where Darkwa was also resident.

He said on September 24, this year, she left for the market and during her absence Darkwa stole one of the goats and that she made every effort to trace it without success.

Madam Kankam, however, became suspicious of Darkwa the next day when she saw him going out of the house with a bulky polythene bag. The court heard that the woman invited two of her children and a witness to accompany her to Darkwa's room, which was unlocked at the time, and found a sack filled with smoked meat, believed to be the goat. The prosecutor said Darkwa took a cutlass and bolted when he saw the woman and the police approaching but he was chased and apprehended. 25 Nov. 05
