Court fines woman GH¢600 for dog bite

Accra, July 13, GNA - An Accra District Magistrate's Court has fined a woman GH¢600 for allowing her strayed dog to bite Michel Martey, a six-year-old child at Nungua in Accra. The accused pleaded guilty and was convicted on her own plea to forty penalty units (GH¢600) fine or 12 months imprisonment in default.

In addition, Kportorphy is to compensate the boy with GH¢200 to pay for his medical expenses.

Police Inspector F. Benneh, prosecuting told the court that the boy lived with his grandmother, Stella Borketey at Nungua, while the accused, Kate Kportorphy resided within the same vicinity. During the afternoon of February 21 this year, the accused allowed her dog astray and when the boy was walking with some relatives, the dog suddenly emerged and attacked him, biting him in the process. He said the dog was identified as belonging to the accused, and when confronted she admitted ownership.

Inspector Benneh said a report was made to the Nungua Police, and a Police medical form issued to the victim to attend hospital. He said the accused was arrested and after investigations charged with the offence.
