Nsawam, June 28, GNA - The Nsawam Magistrate Court, presided over by Mrs. Ivy Heward-Mills on Monday sentenced one, Evans Opare to two years imprisonment for stealing 12 sheep and goats valued at 2.4 million cedis. Opare pleaded guilty to the charges.
The owners of the sheep and goats are Antie Abena Tawiah, Akosua Adjeiwaa and Amuzu Maikpo all from Amanfro and Attahkrom respectively, farming communities near Nsawam.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joyce Adama told the court that the accused person, who is a trader at La in the Greater Accra Region and one accomplice Kwame Annor, who is at large used roasted maize mixed with salt and chemicals to trap the animals.
Chief Inspector Adama said the accused managed to trap 12 of the animals and put them in sacks, placed them in nearby bushes, while Kwame Annor, who is now at large went to Nsawam to bring a taxicab to collect the carcasses.
On his way back with the car, Kwame Annor was chased by the Unit Committee members who were on patrol in the area and sensing danger, he bolted with the taxicab.
Evans Opare, who was waiting for the taxi in a nearby bush was apprehended by the unit committee members and handed over the Nsawam Police including the carcass.
