Court remands bar operator on murder charge

Akim Swedru, Oct. 25, GNA - Kwabena Kyei, a 35-year-old bar operator at Akim Chia in the Birim North district, was on Tuesday remanded by the Akim Swedru Circuit Court on a charge of murdering a 29-year-old farmer, Kwame Andrews.

The accused, whose plea was not taken, is to reappear on December 1. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Abanga Caesar, told the court, presided over by Mr Edward Apenkwa, that the deceased went to the accused person's drinking bar on October 18 at about 20:00 hours to drink.

He said while drinking, the deceased invited Miss Abena Brago, a daughter of the accused, to his table.

The accused, without any cause, rushed to the deceased's table and started assaulting his daughter and when the deceased intervened, he took offence and fought him during which he allegedly threatened that he would teach him a lesson.

The Prosecution said the deceased left the bar and the accused who thereupon closed his drinking bar, armed himself with a screwdriver, pursued Andrews in the dark and stabbed him on the chest. The deceased, he said, shouted for help fell unconscious and was rushed to a nearby clinic where he was referred to the Akim Oda Government Hospital but died on the way at Akim Ofoase.

ASP Caesar said after committing the crime, the accused bolted from the town but was later arrested at Otumi, near Kade in the Kwaebibirem District and charged before the court.
