Jasikan (VR), July 23, GNA - Emmanuel Mensah Attitey, 30 has been remanded in prison custody by a Jasikan magistrate court for allegedly hitting his uncle, Joseph Anai Attitey 63, both of Bowiri Kyiriahin in the Jasikan District, with a pestle resulting in his death. The court, presided over by, Mr Vincent Senoo, remanded him to re-appear on August 10, 2005.
According to the prosecution, both Mensah Attitey, 30 and Anai Attitey 63, stayed in the family house and used to have frequent quarrels with each other on the least provocation.
Sometime in July this year, the two relatives quarrelled again and the deceased left the house with a niece, Grace Attitey to visit a relative who was a patient in another house about two kilometres away. The accused offered five thousand cedis to the patient, Helen Dziwornu but she turned down the offer due to comments that accompanied the gift.
The accused then attempted to force the patient to collect the money, saying that it was the responsibility of his Uncle (the deceased) to look after her. The uncle, Mensah Ayittey did not allow the patient to take the money and the accused took offence and slapped the deceased. When they were separated after a scuffle and the deceased was being led away, the accused took a pestle and hit the uncle, who fell prostate. The accused hit the deceased twice on the forehead, rendering him unconscious.
After the act, the accused bolted and hid himself in a nearby forest.
The family head, said, a search party was organised and apprehended the accused who was handed over to the Police at Jasikan. The deceased was taken to the Jasikan Government Hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission.
Later, the accused who feigned dumb, was arraigned before the Jasikan District Magistrate.
