Timothy Sam, a 23-year-old driver who snatched the handbag of a nurse in Cape Coast has been sentenced to 10 years in imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast.
The handbag contained valuables including a purse, GH¢400.00, among other personal items.
The convict pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and stealing but was found guilty by the court presided over by Mr Seshee Ametewee.
Prosecuting, Vincent Nyinaku a State Attorney said Madam Anastasia Baidoo, the victim works at Mercy Government Hospital in Mankessim near Cape Coast.
According to him, on Thursday, August 31, 2017, the complainant was from the Regional Health Directorate Area heading towards Our Lady of Apostle (OLA) College of Education when she spotted two men on a motorcycle closing up on her.
He said Sam who was riding the motorcycle slowed down for his accomplice who was the pillion rider to snatch the handbag.
The Prosecution said the staff at the Regional Health Directorate and other passers-by pursued him when he scaled the wall of the Directorate and eventually arrested him.
While he was being sent to the police station, he freed himself and run into the sea but some divers followed him up re-arrested and handed him over to the police.
