Accra, Nov. 25, GNA - An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday imposed a fine of 500,000 cedis on a drunken driver for careless driving. The accused Abu Kunde pleaded guilty.
The Prosecutor, Police Inspector Ben Darfour told the Court that on May 19 Kunde who was a Ford pickup vehicle entered the main Karl Quist Road without observing traffic regulations and as a result ran into an Opel Omega Saloon car.
Both vehicles were damaged and the drivers of the vehicles lodged complaints at the Osu Police Station. At the Police station, Kunde was smelling of alcohol and when he was tested it was found out that he had as much as 38 per cent alcohol concentration in his blood.
Chief Superintendent Victor Tandoh, Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the GNA that the legal limit is 0.08 per cent of alcohol in the blood.
He pleaded with the courts to in addition to imposing fines also ban drunken drivers from driving for a period of time ranging from three months to 12 months to act as a deterrent to other drivers.
