An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday handed a seven-year jail term to one Felix Okletey, an electrician, for defiling a ten-year old girl.
Felix pleaded not guilty to the charge but was found guilty after going through a full trial by the court presided over by Sedinam Agbemava.
Presenting the facts of the case, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Adiza Suleman told the court that the complainant Augustina Arhin is a caterer, who lives at Olympia a suburb of La.
She said the victim aged 10 is a primary five pupil at Labone, while Felix is an Electrician apprentice who lives in the same house with the complainant and the victim.
She said on September 22, 2012, in the afternoon, the accused person invited the victim and her eight year old sister Tobi Salvador to watch movie.
ASP Suleman said while Tobi the victim’s sister left the room to urinate, the convict quickly lifted the victim from the floor where she was sitting and straight unto the bed.
Felix immediately removed her skirt and the panties and was at the verge of having sex with the victim but unfortunately Tobi entered the room and met the convict wearing his trousers while the victim was lying on the bed with her skirt and panties removed.
The prosecutor revealed that Felix told the victim and her sister that he was just playing with her. The victim and her eight year old sister later left the convict’s room.
She said the victim and her sister did not disclose what took place to anyone in the house because the convict had threatened them that they would die if they do so.
The prosecutor told the court that on September 23, 2012 at about 2200 hours the victim was returning from toilet when Felix held her and forced her into a nearby bathroom.
She said the victim shouted for help but because it was late nobody came to her aid. All attempts to have sex with the victim proved futile. Again the convict warned her never to disclose it to her mum or anyone or else.
The victim sustained injury on her left leg when the convict forced her into the bathroom.
ASP Sulemen said the complainant saw the injury on the victim’s leg and questioned. She later disclosed what the convict did to her on September, 22 and 23, 2012.
She said a report was made to the police and on October 1, 2012 and Felix was arrested.
