Farmer gets seven years for defilement

A circuit court at Agona Swedru has jailed Kojo Afenyi, a 19-year-old farmer at Breman Fosuansah in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District, seven years in hard labour for sexually defiling a nine-year-old school girl.

He pleaded guilty.

Police Inspector Alfred Boatey told the court presided over by Mr Nathaniel E.K Osam that on March 28 this year, the girl was sent by her mother to harvest pepper at the garden at Breman Fosuansah .

He said while the girl was harvesting pepper, Afenyi emerged from the bush, dragged her into a nearby coconut farm and had sex with her.

The prosecution said Kwesi Otabil, the father of the victim, who went to the garden to attend to natures’ call, saw the accused sexually assaulting his daughter.

Insp. Boatey said the father of the victim raised the alarm and the Afenyi took to his heels.

The prosecution said Afenyi was arrested by the town folks and handed over to the police, and in his (convict) caution statement he confessed that he had sex with the girl.

Insp. Boatey said the mother of the girl reported the case to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit at Breman Asikuma Police, and a medical form was issued to the victim to attend hospital.

The prosecution said medical report indicated that the convict had sex with the girl. **
