Some trigger-happy highway robbers Tuesday morning shot indiscriminately into two vehicles, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old female trader and injuring scores of other passengers.
The deceased, identified as Vida Amoani, was said to be travelling on a mini bus with other passengers from Bibiani to Kumasi when the incident occurred between Kwanfinfin/Betinko, at about 6:00 am.
The robbers, led by one Enoch Alex aka Kabobo, who is said to be on the police wanted list, reportedly feigned policemen, stopped the vehicles but the drivers refused to stop and so they started shooting.
After committing the heinous crime, the hoodlums, who could not take away precious items of their victims, fled into a nearby bush but they were chased and overpowered by a mob who allegedly lynched Kabobo.
Through strenuous efforts of the police, with support from people in the nearby towns, two suspects – Kofi Boakye and Michael Agyeman – who were with Kabobo, were arrested.
The police, who acted swiftly to a distress call about the invasion of robbers in the area, also managed to apprehend two more suspects believed to be members of the gang namely, Tina Opoku and Stephen Owusu.
Awuah, an eyewitness, said the three suspects were sent to the chief’s palace but the angry mob snatched them away and started beating them from all angles until a police team arrived to rescue the suspects, who were looking very weak.
He said Kabobo gave up the ghost a few minutes after they were rescued.
When contacted, DCOP Kofi Boakye, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the police were doing everything possible to arrest all those in connection with the robbery case.
