Nkwanta, Feb 12, GNA - Four suspected armed robbers blocked a section of the Hohoe/Nkwanta road and forcibly snatched mobile phones, cash and bags from passengers in the early hours of Wednesday. Madam Elizabeth Dzramado of Adidome, a victim of the robbery and the only passenger to report the incident to the police so far, said the robbery occurred five kilometres to Nkwanta around 0200 hours. She said the robbers, wielding guns, emerged from the bush as soon as their minibus encountered the firewood barricade and had to stop, subjecting them to dehumanizing searches to get their booty. Madam Dzramado said she was robbed of mobile phones and two pieces of cloth.
Mr Douglas Kumah, Nkwanta District Police commander, said in an interview with the GNA that no arrest had been made and that other victims were yet to report the incident to the police. He said two other Nkwanta/Accra bound vehicles suffered the same fate. He pleaded with drivers plying the segment of road between Brewaniase-Nkwanta to avoid using that section between 0100 hours and 0300 hours.
He said the non-availability of any mobile phone network compounded police efforts to patrol and receive information, and appealed to mobile phone companies to extend their services to the area. Last year that area experienced five robberies. 12 Feb 10
