Irresponsible mothers ought to face the law - Judge

Mr Justice Charles Agbavor, Volta Regional Supervising High Court Judge, has said irresponsible mothers should also be made to face family tribunals.

He said there was no law that stipulated that only men had the responsibility to look after their children.

Justice Agbavor was speaking at the inauguration of a new Magistrate’s Court at Aflao, in the Ketu-South Municipality.

The area already has Circuit and High Courts.

Justice Agbavor made the remark when he announced that a family tribunal and juvenile unit would soon be added to the Magistrate’s Court.

Justice Agbavor asked Judicial Service staff to desist from presenting themselves as linkmen of Judges through whom litigants could pass gifts to influence judgments

He said the upkeep of judicial dignity must be everyone’s goal.

Justice Agbavor commended the Assembly and the Traditional Authorities for making the project real.

He said the new court would help offload part of the loads on the High and Circuit Courts, noting that as a burgeoning border area, institutions in Aflao needed upgrading.

Mr.Dan Kofi Aggey, Volta Regional President of the Ghana Bar Association, advised the people not to regard the additional court as opportunity for added litigation, which he described as expensive and time wasting.

Mr.Pascal Lamptey, Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, said the new court would tackle crime in the area, perceived to be high and a disincentive to business and economic growth there.

Mr.Lamptey said the court would help the Assembly enforce its sanitation bye-laws.
