Cape Coast, June 1, GNA - A 20-year-old unemployed man, Joseph Quainoo, has been sentenced to a one year jail term by a Circuit Court in Cape Coast for assault and stealing.
The court presided over by Mr Samuel Asare Nyarko also ordered that the convict be deported back to Cote d'Ivoire from where he came, after serving his sentence.
Mr Quainoo had pleaded not guilty.
Before his sentence, he appealed to the court to forgive him because he had regretted his actions but the presiding judge ignored his plea.
On April 23 the complainant, Derrick Howusu who lives with his father at the Mfantsipim School and was on his way to buy drugs met Quainoo who demanded one Ghana Cedi from him.
The complainant told the convict he was a student and therefore had no money.
The convict then became angry and forcefully put his hand into the complainant's pocket and took GH¢1.00 and a mobile phone worth GH¢30.= 00 and run away.
The complainant's shouts for help attracted Derrick's elder brother to the scene who pursued Quainoo and caught him.
In the struggle, the convict bit his right index finger. The complainant's father also came out and joined the struggle and they overpowered Quainoo and handed him over to the police.
