A 35-year-old man yesterday appeared before the Accra Circuit Court, charged with alleged assault.

George Afriyie, allegedly assaulted his step-mother, Agnes Churchill, following a misunderstanding over food.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and remanded in police custody.

The accused would appear again on September 27.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector of Police Faustina Gyaba, told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Mensah that on August 10, the accused assaulted Mrs Churchill, whose husband is deceased, in their family home, at Alajo.

The prosecution noted that the accused lived in the same house as his step-mother after the passing of his father, in 2023.

Chief Insp Gyaba told the court that Agnes had been feeding the accused ever since his father passed away.

The court heard that on August 7, Agnes could not cook because she was unwell.

The prosecutor said three days later when the accused returned home at about 9pm, there was no food at home.

Chief Insp Gyaba indicated that when the accused inquired why his food was not served,

Agnes told him she could not cook because she was not well.

The policeman said that the accused got infuriated and started hurling insults at his mother.

Chief Insp Gyaba further noted that when Agnes tried to calm Afriyie down, the accused pushed her and she fell on the ground and passed out.

The court heard that the accused took to his heels after he realised the woman had passed out.

She said some neighbours took Agnes to the hospital and reported the case to the police.

The policewoman then mentioned that the accused was later arrested and brought to court.
