Mason in court for attempted rape

Accra, April 7, GNA - A 30 year-old mason was on Monday put before an Accra Circuit Court for attempting to rape and assault a housewife at Ayi Mensah, near Madina, Accra. Jerry Brown, charged with attempt to commit crime and assault pleaded not guilty and the court admitted him to bail in the sum of 1,000 Ghana cedis to reappear on April 30. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr George Abavelim told the court that, the accused and the complainant live in the same house at Ghana Flag Village, near Ayi Mensah. The prosecutor said at about 2000 hours on March 29, this year, Brown knocked at the complainant's door and informed her that her husband wanted to talk to her on his mobile phone. The prosecution said the complainant, a mother of two, opened the door and after talking to her husband on the phone handed it back to him. However, Brown, who pretended to be drunk, refused to leave the complainant's room and lay on her bed. The complainant managed to pull Brown out of her room but at about midnight, Brown returned to the complainant's door, entered the room and put off her lantern. The prosecution said Brown grabbed the complainant in an attempt to rape her. A struggle ensued between the complainant and Brown and she raised the alarm and her two children woke up. The prosecutor said during the struggle, Brown hit the complainant's face with a lantern. On March 30, at 1200 noon Brown went back to the complainant and picked up a quarrel with her over his lost phone the previous night. The complainant reported the matter to the Police at Ayi Mensah and Brown was arrested.
