Mother abandons baby at Lashibi

Sakumono District Police have launched a desperate search for the mother of a day old baby abandoned in front of a resident’s door at Community 16, Lashibi near Tema.

The abandoned baby boy, who is said to be in a stable condition when found, has been named ‘Nyhira’ meaning ‘blessing’ by some security personnel at the District Police.

The incident, which attracted bystanders, touched the heart of a mother in the area who took the poor baby to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police at Sakumono.

Superintendent Alex K. Wowolo, Sakumono District Police Commander, confirmed the pathetic incident to Daily Guide when contacted, noting that his outfit was keen to trace the mother suspected to have delivered of the baby around the vicinity.

He said the child was brought to the police by a woman who came to lodge a complaint about the incident. The police have begun investigations into the matter. “Our priority is to trace the mother to unite them,” he indicated.

According to him, it were the onlookers who had thronged the scene to see the baby who made the woman pick the baby, pointing out that: “We will do everything within our power to get the mother of the baby”.

The District Police Commander assured that the baby would be handed to the Social Welfare Department at the Police Hospital in Accra for onward delivery to an orphanage where the baby was expected to be kept until investigations were concluded in the matter
