The Accra Police Command has begun a probe into a case of attempted murder of Nii Okuley Apefor III, Chief of Mayirah near Pokuase in the Ga-South District of the Greater Accra Region.

This follows an attack on the chief’s residence at 10pm on Monday, November 28 by some unknown assailants who inflicted machete wounds on three family members of the chief.

Nii Okuley who confirmed the attack to Class News revealed he was not home at the time the assailants struck but suspects it was linked to a protracted chieftaincy and land dispute in the town.

He believes the rival faction in the dispute may have hired killers to eliminate him and also have access to Mayirah lands. He says several petitions to the police at Pokuase and Amasaman as well as to the District Chief Executive (DCE) have yielded no results.

According to him, he has picked up information that the rival faction “gave huge sums of monies to some land guards to come and attack us but fortunately the land guards did not come to execute their task and they (rival faction) are still engaging people from other villages and these people come to attack”.

Nii Okuley was of the view that the tussle by the other faction is aimed at possessing the Mayirah lands and the issue has been reported to the police who have begun processes to pick up the individuals behind the violence.

He said they are using legal means to resolve the matter but they will not sit back without physically protecting themselves if the police do not offer enough protection.

“I’m only hoping and praying that the police will pick up their legal responsibilities and protect us,” he stated.
