Policeman assaults driver in Accra

A driver was allegedly assaulted Saturday June 18 at Tudu in Accra by a cop after he failed to heed calls to pull up.

Prince Marfo, who emerged from the attack with his right eye swollen and nursing a cut on the brow, recounted his ordeal at the hands of Mr Frank Owusu of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department, on Accra News.

He said he was negotiating a curve in when he heard the policeman ordering someone to stop. However, believing that he was not the one being addressed, as he had disgorged his car of all passengers, and was left with only his mate in the vehicle, he carried on his way.

But Mr Owusu caught up with the driver a few moments later, and ordered him to make a U-turn and drive to the MTTD. But as Marfo parked his car at the premises and made his way to the charge office with his mate and the policeman, Mr Owusu, still enraged, slapped him from behind and kicked him to the floor subsequently, following up with more slaps.

Owusu narrated that when he enquired from the policeman of his crime, the officer got further infuriated and punched him repeatedly in the face, resulting in a puffed eye and a cut above his eye, all the while as MTTD officials looked on.

“I am not able to open my eyes and I cannot see clearly,” he told Nana Ama Agyarko in the studios of Accra100.5FM.

The police officer involved, when contacted, refused to comment on the matter, stating he was attending to traffic duties.
