A 19 – year - old drivers’ mate who appeared before an Accra Circuit Court has been abandoned by his parents following a robbery charge levelled against him.
Clifford Oteng is being held for robbing one Aganda Cecilia of her bag containing a mobile phone, a cash of GH¢200.00 and other belongings.
According to the investigator in the matter, Oteng’s father was not answering his calls anymore thereby making work difficult for him.
The investigator said the accused person had been sick and he had to send him to the hospital with his money as well as purchase drugs prescribed by doctors.
When the court demanded to know the whereabouts of Oteng’s Mother, Oteng claimed his mother was in Kumasi.
The Police Investigator contended that although Oteng had been admitted to bail nobody was coming forth to execute the bail.
The court on humanitarian grounds, reviewed Oteng’s bail to GH?5,000.00 with two sureties to reappear on November 10.
There was mystery surrounding the age of Oteng as he had told the Police on his arrest that he was 18 years but when he appeared before the court he stated that he was 15 years.
To clear the doubts, the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri ordered the Police to ascertain Oteng’s real age at the Police Hospital.
A report from the Hospital indicated that Oteng was 19 years.
Prosecuting; Chief Superintendent Duuti Tuaruka said the complainant is a factory attendant who lives at Tabora in Accra while the accused is a driver’s mate residing at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
He said at about 11:30am on May 24, 2014, the complainant was looking for a car to send her sick sister to the hospital and joined a taxi with three young men, including the accused person on board.
Chief Supt Tuaruka said midway through the journey, one of the men snatched the hand bag from the back seat and pushed her out of the moving cab and sped off.
The police officer said Cecilia sustained injuries on her face and left hand.
The eye-witnesses in the area chased the taxi and arrested the accused person.
