The Kumasi police have apprehended two suspected robbers who usually tie the necks of taxi drivers with sponge before robbing them.

The two dreaded robbers were identified as Iddrisu Nuhu, 28 and 32-year-old Saeed Sesei.

On August 3 this year, they robbed a driver in charge of a Toyota taxicab, registered AS 5878-12, but were arrested when they tried to escape.

The two hoodlums are now assisting the police in their investigations and will be arraigned soon, the police disclosed.

DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, made this known during a press briefing in Kumasi.

According to him, Nuhu and Sesei are robbers whose modus operandi is to use nylon sponge to tie the necks of taxi drivers and rob them.

On August 3, he said, Daniel Osei, 44, a taxi driver, was operating when the duo hired his car from the Central Market area to Bekwai Roundabout.

On reaching the Kumasi branch of GIMPA area at Denyame, the two suspected criminals attacked the driver.

They tied the driver’s neck with a nylon sponge against the driver’s seat and took away his Samsung mobile phone and an unspecified amount of money.

The duo then fled into a nearby bush but luck eluded them as the noise made by their victim attracted people to the scene.

Nuhu and Sesei were given a hot chase and arrested by their pursuers, who handed them over to the police after severe beatings.

DCOP Kofi Boakye said a nylon sponge and a knife case were found on the two suspected robbers upon a search.

The two suspects have so far failed to produce the items they took from the driver.
