A KUMASI Circuit Court presided over by Mrs. Rita Agyeman-Budu has sentenced a 45-year-old mason to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for sexually molesting a 14-year-old primary four pupil resulting in pregnancy.
The convict, Nuhu Iddrisu, dragged the girl, a pupil of Kronum M/A Primary School in Kumasi into his room, where he defiled her after helping her to fetch water.
The court found Nuhu Iddrisu guilty of the charge of defilement against him, contrary to section 101 (2) of Act 29/60 as amended by section 2 of Act 554/98. He had pleaded not guilty.
Presenting the facts of the case to the court, Police Chief Inspector Rose Essuman said both the complainant, who is the mother of the victim and the convict are residents of Kronum, a suburb of Kumasi.
In the month of July, 2012, the victim went to fetch water from a borehole close to the convict’s house and he offered to help her.
According to the prosecutor, as the victim was returning home, the convict called her back to give her a message. When she obliged he dragged her to his room and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
The prosecutor said Nuhu continued to have sex with the juvenile for a while until she became pregnant; a development which forced him to go into hiding in Accra.
On October 13, 2012, the convict was arrested by the Suame Police upon a tip-off when he returned to Kumasi.
In his caution statement to the police, he admitted having sexual intercourse with the victim on four occasions but denied responsibility for the pregnancy.
In another development, a self-styled actor, Charles Kingsley Abankwa, 25, a native of Nsuta Mampong in the Ashanti Region was sentenced to five years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court presided over by Emmanuel Amoh Yartey.
He was arraigned for inflicting wounds on the head of one Solomon Prempeh Amfo, a businessman based in Accra.
He pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm contrary to section 69 of Act 29/60.
Giving the facts of the case to the court, Police Inspector D. Opoku said the convict and his mother stay at the complainant’s father’s house at Breman UGC, a suburb of Kumasi, as caretakers.
On October 31, 2012, at about 2:00 p.m., the complainant, who had returned from Accra, got to the house after visiting a colleague.
According to the prosecution, when the complainant got home, the convict enquired of him who the owner of the house was. He, the complainant, claimed ownership.
He said as the victim turned to enter his room, the convict, without any provocation, pulled out a machete and inflicted a deep wound on the complainant’s head, leaving him to bleed profusely.
The complainant was rushed to the Breman Police Station where he was issued a medial form to attend hospital, after he made distress calls to residents to rescue him.
Meanwhile, the convict, after committing the act went into hiding until November 12, 2012, when he was arrested and handed over to the Police at Breman.
