Accra, Sept. 19, GNA - The La District Magistrate's Court for the second time in one week remanded Edwin Eastman, the boyfriend of Suzzy Malike Williams, an actress, into prison custody. No charges were read out to Eastman, 25 year-old Liberian, who was in the car with Suzzy Williams when it crashed on September 8 leading to her death.
Eastman, whose plea was not taken, would reappear on Thursday September 22.
Addressing a packed court, the Prosecution said it needed one week to complete investigations.
The Prosecution further expressed fears that if Eastman was granted bail he might interfere with witnesses. "He could abscond from the jurisdiction of this court," the Prosecution said. The Prosecution noted that Eastman failed to report the accident to the Police and it was the Suzzy Williams' parents, who rather lodged a complaint with the Police.
But a team of four lawyers for Eastman said it was surprised that investigations had not been completed.
Renewing its application for bail, defence counsel stated that Eastman would not abscond if he were admitted to bail saying: "He has his parents residing in the country" and added that Eastman's fundamental human rights were being trampled upon.
They contended that Eastman would not in any way interfere with investigations and would readily cooperate with the Police. "He is prepared to report to the Police as often as the Police may request." Defence counsel registered their displeasure over the publicity given by the press saying this was a normal motor case. "This is not a case that bail must be refused under the Motor and Traffic Laws of Ghana."
The court after listening to both submissions declined bail but informed the Prosecution that it was giving them the last adjournment to complete investigations.
It, therefore, adjourned the matter to Thursday 22. Suzzy Williams and Eastman were travelling along the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel when their Mitsubishi Pajero four-wheel drive vehicle was involved in an accident resulting in Suzzy William's death.
