Two cable thieves jailed 34 months

Breman Asikuma (C/R), Sept. 8, GNA - A district Magistrate court at Breman Asikuma, has jailed two persons for stealing electrical cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Both Daniel Achie, 21, a driver's mate, who received 18 months, and Eric Baachaa, 19, student of Action Progressive Senior High School in Accra, who had 16 months, pleaded guilty to the charge. Police Chief Inspector Gershon Awuyeeh told the court presided over by Mrs. Andy Adei that at about 0020 hours on August 15, 2008, residents at the Breman Asikuma Senior High School area experienced a sudden blackout,

Prosecution said the people detected that electrical cables have been stolen from the area and they informed the police at Breman Asikuma and drivers at the main lorry station in the town about the theft. Chief Inspector Awuyeeh said the executive of the drivers union at Breman Asikuma asked the driver of a vehicle that had just left the town for Accra around 0230 hours to report at the nearest police station. According to prosecution, the driver on receiving the massage informed the passengers about it,

Chief Inspector Awuyeeh said Achie, who was in vehicle with Baachaa, wanted to alight but the driver did not stop the vehicle. Prosecution said Achie broke the windscreen of the vehicle and stabbed a passenger who was preventing him from escaping. Chief Inspector Awuyeeh said Achie jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee but he was arrested by the driver and some passengers and handed over to the police at Kasoa. Prosecution said when the police searched the vehicle, the found a fertilizer sack containing electrical cables, which Baachaa and Achie claimed ownership. 8 Sept. 08
