Two persons jailed 26 years for possessing AK rifle

Tema, June 12, GNA- A Circuit Court "A" in Tema has sentenced two suspected armed robbers in procession of AK 47 rifle to 13 years imprisonment each in hard labour. Wisdom Quarshie Afeke, 22, and Kwame Akuffo 22, both unemployed, pleaded guilty of charges of unlawful entry, causing damage, stealing and escape from lawful custody.

The police arrested Akuffo at Tema Manhean and Afeke at a police barrier at Sogakope in the Volta Region. The third accused person, Adwoa Konadu, a 23-year-old seamstress at Tema Manhean, the girl friend of Afeke, charged with harbouring a criminal, pleaded not guilty. She was remanded in custody for further investigations until June 17.

Chief Inspector Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, a Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), told the GNA on Saturday at Tema that on May 31, this year, policemen at a barrier at Sogakope found Afeke carrying an AK 47 rifle. The PRO said upon interrogation, Afeke told the policemen that he was sending the rifle to Akuff0 who had left Aflao to wait for him at Tema Manhean for the gun.

Chief Insp Nketia-Yeboah said the Police at Tema, following a tip off from their colleagues at the Sogakope barrier, arrested Akuffo, who was lodging with Konadu at Tema Manhean. The PRO said a critical examination of the rifle revealed that it was the gun that was stolen from a policeman on duty at Tema in January this year. He said the two suspects who were arrested for the offences were wanted for escaping from police custody in Tema.
