Two hunters were shot dead by their colleagues in separate incidents during hunting expeditions in the Upper West Region last week.
As a result, hunters in the region have been frightened by the two incidents and are now scared of going out for hunting.
The two victims; Hamidu Bayorbor and Ahmed Abubakar, who were shot dead at separate locations at Kojokperi in the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District and Jeyiri in the Wa East District respectively, were both mistaken for game by their colleague hunters.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Edmund Nyamekye, who is the Acting Upper West Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) told the Ghana News Agency.
He said on February 6, 2014, one Abudu Moro came to the station to inform the police that suspect Fuseini Iddrisu, aged 25, and Hamidu Bayorbor, aged 42, left home together for hunting.
While in the bush, they decided to go on separate directions with an agreement that they would both meet at a particular point.
Fuseini Iddrisu, the suspect, upon arrival at the point mistook his friend Hamidu Bayorbor for an antelope and shot at him killing him instantly.
ASP Nyamekye said Fuseini Iddrisu is currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
In a related development, the Acting PRO told the GNA that on February 8, 2014, one Alhaji Mohammed A. Kabore informed the police that two hunters namely; Abdul Rahman and Ahmed Abubakar went for hunting together in a village called Jeyiri in the Wa East District.
While looking for game, Abdul Rahman spotted Ahmed Abubakar and mistook him for game and shot him. He said the victim was then rushed to the Wa Government Hospital where he died.
Abdul Rahman is also currently in police custody assisting in investigations.
