A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 25- year old unemployed man to 10 years imprisonment for defiling and impregnating a 14-year old girl at Teshie.

Samuel Adjetey Ayi, charged with defilement, was found guilty by the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku at the end of the trial. Ayi is said to have committed the act in December 2016.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire said the victim’s father is the complainant in the matter. The complainant, victim and Ayi reside at Teshie in Accra.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said during the year 2016, the complainant was informed by a neighbour that she suspects the victim of being pregnant.

Prosecution said based on that information, the complainant called the victim and interrogated her about her pregnancy and she confided in him (the complainant) that it was Ayi, who had sexual intercourse with her on several occasions, but she did not know she was pregnant.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said the complainant took the victim to a private health facility and a pregnancy test conducted confirmed that the victim was pregnant.

Thereafter, prosecution said, a formal complaint was lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Nungua, where a medical form was issued to the victim to seek medical treatment.

Following the medical treatment it came to light that the victim was eleven weeks pregnant and a full report was submitted to the Police to that effect.

Prosecution said Ayi was later arrested.
