The Upper West Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has issued a call for increased vigilance among residents of Wa following the tragic death of Opoku Richard, a middle-aged man found with his throat slit in the suburb of Dobile.
This incident marks the 17th murder case in the municipality over the past three years, leading to widespread fear and concern.
Stephen Yakubu, Chairman of the Upper West REGSEC, expressed shock over the incident despite the deployment of numerous security personnel such as police and soldiers, who have been patrolling the area.
He emphasised the need for residents to remain vigilant, especially in light of the recent dawn incidents, and encouraged them to provide any relevant information that could aid the investigation.
"We urge residents to cooperate fully with law enforcement and share any details they may have regarding the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the victim," he stated in an interview with myjoyonline.com.
In response to the escalating situation, Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Member of Parliament for Wa Central, has offered a reward of 100,000 cedis for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible for the killings. He called on the police to intensify their efforts and cautioned against vigilantism, advocating for a systematic justice approach.
"If the police do not act decisively, there is a risk that residents may take matters into their own hands. It is imperative for security forces to employ sophisticated investigative techniques to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of our community," he stated.
As authorities continue to investigate these tragic acts of violence, the community remains anxious, hoping for justice for the victims and peace for Wa residents.
