A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a night watchman to three years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing drugs belonging to his employer.
Kofi Awonaba pleaded guilty to the crime.
Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour Kyei told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amo-Yartey that the complainant, Sylvester Owusu, operates a pharmaceutical shop at Bantama in Kumasi and has engaged the convict as the watchman.
On March 5, at about 0130 hours, a taxi driver spotted Awonaba removing drugs from the shop and became suspicious.
He therefore raised the alarm that attracted some people in the neighborhood to the scene but the convict managed to slip away.
Shortly after, Anwonaba returned to the shop, this time wearing different clothes.
That would, however, not deceive the driver as he easily made him out as the very person he saw stealing from the shop.
He was arrested and handed him over to a police patrol team that happened to be in the area.
He confessed to the crime during police interrogation.**
