Wife Beater goes in for three years

Accra July 4, GNA - A 26-year-old driver, who battered his wife with a log for refusing him sex, was on Tuesday sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court. Francis Appoh, who shed tears after the court had pronounced his three-year jail term, pleaded guilty to causing harm. Appoh left his wife, Ms Delilah Kporxa in a pool of blood after battering her with the log.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Lawrence Gbele told the court that Ms Kporxa was married to Appoh and had two children. Chief Inspector Gbele said on June 8, 2006 at about 0100 hours Appoh demanded sex from Ms Kporxa but she refused.

Prosecution said Appoh got offended and went out of their room, picked up a piece of log and hit Ms Kporxa on her head. Appoh after committing the crime bolted and left Ms Kporxa, who had fainted in a pool of blood.

The Prosecution said a Co-tenant, however, heard an unusual noise in the Ms Kporxa's room and entered only to find her in a pool of blood. The Co-tenant rushed Ms Kporxa to the hospital and reported the matter to the Police.
