KNUST Alumni of North America is delighted to invite you to their 8th Biennial Convention which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Springfield, Virginia from Friday July 1st to Monday July 4th, 2011. The event coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Centenary celebration of the birth of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Founder of the Nation, and of our proud university. The Convention will recognize his extraordinary vision and foresight and also all alumni members who in one way or the other have helped to nurture this association since its inception in 1999.
The theme for this year’s convention is “BEYOND THE HORIZON”: Assessing KNUST’s Future Strategies for addressing current national and international challenges facing the University.
The event will be patronized by many important dignitaries from Ghana and the United States. Among the guests expected from the University are both the current and the past Vice Chancellors Prof. William Otoo Ellis and Prof. Akwasi Adarkwa respectively. The Ghana delegation will also include both the current and the past Presidents of the Ghana Alumni Association Mr. Tony Danklu and Prof Seth Opuni Asiamah.
Every other year, the North American branch of Alumni Association meets with regional professionals, academics, business people and many dynamic individuals and entrepreneurs to debate and deliberate on how best the Association can help the University. At this anniversary event, funds would be raised, and all proceeds would be donated to the Alumni Association for the construction of Students’ residential facility on Kumasi campus.
The event will also provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and establish professional and social networking. The previous event was held in Chicago, Illinois in 2009. The Special Guest of Honor and the Keynote speaker was His Excellency Alhaji Aliu Mahama, an Alumnus, and the former Vice President of Republic of Ghana. Other guests of honor present were Honorable Koby Koomson, Former Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States and Professor Sam Akainyah, an alumnus of Akainyah Gallery, Chicago,
PROGRAM ACTIVITIES LINEUP
FRIDAY JULY 1: Arrival of Guests and Socializing
The Hotel hospitality room will open for guests’ arrival and socialization. This event is open to all alumni, friends and family. This will be an opportunity to have close contacts with our high profile guests and dignitaries who will be participating in the event.
SATURDAY JULY 2: Convention Plenary Sessions
After the President’s address, The New Vice Chancellor, Professor W O. Ellis will address the Convention on the State of the University. His address will be followed by reports from the Provosts of the Colleges. The Association has extended invitations to diplomatic dignitaries, thought provoking, motivational speakers in the communities to spearhead the event.
Lunch and Networking
Featured Speaker: Honorable Kobby Koomson. During lunch time, convention participants will have a rare opportunity to hear a powerful motivational speaker, Honorable Koomson, Former Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, an Honorary KNUST Alumni and President of Ask Information Security Group based in Washington, DC. He will speak on the Role of Ghanaians in the Diaspora in the Social and Economic Development of Ghana.
In the afternoon, the Vice Chancellors (Past and Present) alongside the invited speakers: Prof. S. O. Asiamah, Prof. Sam Adunyah , Prof. George Ayittey and Mr. Tony Danklu will lead a thought provoking discussion on the theme of the Convention. This will be moderated by Prof. Sam Akainyah. The Afternoon discussion will be followed by a brief presentation on the newly established Campus Development Corporation by Dr. Kojo Andoh, a Past President of the Association
We will wrap up the afternoon session with the General Election: Elections will be held to elect new National Executive. Among the positions open are President and Vice, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer and Publicity officer.
SATURDAY EVENING
Dinner Dance and Fund raising: (July 2, 2011 – 8pm -2am)
The Alumni body, and our distinguished Keynote Speaker, Honorable Samia Christina Nkrumah, the daughter of Osagyefo Dr. Nkrumah, and MP for Jomoro West, together with our distinguished invited guests, Ghanaian Associations In DMV area, diplomats and dignitaries will meet for Dinner Dance and fund raising. His Excellency Daniel Ohene Agyekum will chair the evening function. During the event, Honorable Samia will address the gathering. After that the current Vice Chancellor will present distinguished awards to outstanding Alumni who have contributed immensely to the cause of the University and the Association. This is the Fun part!!! This will be a ticketed event. Stay tuned for detailed information.
SUNDAY
Capital Sightseeing Tour: (July 3, 2011 – 10am-12pm)
Washington DC capital tour buses would convey alumni for sightseeing into the capital for historical and memorial place in the City, the historical images, white house tales and many things in the capital. This will also be followed by a picnic hosted by the DMV chapter of the association from 2pm-7pm
Convention Academia Tour: (July 1 – July 5, 2011 - Week long Event) The Vice Chancellor, Provosts, University Faculties and alumni executives will visit some universities in the Washington DC Metro area. This would be a great project, whereby they get the opportunity to interact with faculty members from some of the finest Universities in United States.
