China, July 8, Ghana Universities Team arrived in Shenzhen to participate in the 26th World Universities Games. The 56 contingent of men and women was led by the president Prof. Ernest Awanta and the Secretary-General of Ghana Universities Sports Association, Mr. Daniel Apaak.
The opening ceremony was performed in a grand style and Ghana played its first match against their Japanese counterpart. Ghana dominated the entire 90mins play but drew 2-2. The Ghana Universities Team were there for men soccer, athletics, and women table tennis.
Ghanaian Community also led by its Chairman ( JAMES ASARE TANO ) was at the Bao’an Xixiang Sports Center to give their support during a match between Ghana Universities and United Kingdom Universities. The Community was there with a LIVE BAND to cheer their home side but unfortunately luck eluded them and lost to their Colonial Masters; Ghana : 0-1 : UK
On July 22nd, the Ghana Universities Team paid a courtesy call on Ghanaian Community in Guangzhou and a banquet was organized for them. At the banquet, the Vice Chairman and the Vice Secretary took turns to brief the team on business opportunities in China and the role Ghanaian Community is playing to strengthen Ghana-China relations.
The team which is dominated by final year students were also advised to be on alert of charlatans who advertise non-existent job opportunities in China. With regards to pursuing further education in China, the Community urges the prospective applicants to channel their enquiries directly to the institutions or to their outfit.
The Ghanaian Community recounted a member of cases their office is handling involving innocent Ghanaians stranded in China due to misinformation and misconception.
Mr. Joseph Yaw Adu of KNUST who is a member of the Ghana Universities Sports Association leadership thanked the Ghanaian Community for the warm reception and promised to highlight the good works of the community back home in Ghana.
