The Ghana High Commission in Freetown has on behalf of the Ghanaian community presented a number items valued at $5000 to three local institutions.
At a ceremony at the Chancery in Freetown, the High Commissioner, Kabral Blay-Amihere presented 10 assorted sewing machines to the Handicapped Action Movement, a local NGO of handicapped which seeks to impart skills and vocation to its membership. The Milton Margai School for the Blind also received 10 tape recorders for learning purposes.
And in support of the building of a dental clinic for the town of Lungi by Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with UNAMSIL, the High Commissioner presented five packs of roofing sheets and an air-conditioner to the commnading officer of the Ghanbatt 7.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, High Commissioner BLay-Amihere said the presentation was under the auspices of the DOLLAR A MONTH FOR GHANA PROJECT launched last year to support humanitarian causes in both Ghana and Sierra Leone.
In its first year, the Fund realised $20,000 being the voluntary contributions of Ghanaians working in Sierra Leone.
A similar presentation under the DOLLAR A MONTH FOR GHANA PROJECT, was made on March 31, 2003 in Accra during which 300 dual desks and 200 reading glasses for school kids, all worth 130 million cedis were presented to the Ministry of Education, Armed Forces Educational Unit and the Ghana Eye Care Secretariat of the Ministry of Health.
In another development Lt. Colonel Braimah Musah, the Commanding Officer of the Ghanaian peakeeping unit serving with UNAMSIL, Ghanbatt 7 also presented a number of items including food, used clothing, sheets for tents and toiletries to the Mape Internment Camp for refugees who are ex-combatants of the Liberian civil war.
Another unit of the Ghana Armed Forces, which operated a hospital, Ghanmed Level 11 at Kenema also presented 10 bags of rice to an Amputee Camp in Freetown before leaving for home.
