High School student Found Dead In Pool

.... dies after being found under water during swim class

MANCHESTER, Conn. — A 14-year-old student died Wednesday after he was pulled from a Manchester High School swimming pool during a swim class, police said.

The freshman student was participating in a class led by a physical education teacher Wednesday morning when he was found under water, Manchester police Capt. Chris Davis said. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

The student was identified as Malvrick Donkor, who was originally from Ghana and moved to the area only a few months earlier.

Davis said there will be an extensive review into the circumstances that led to the boy's death.

"At this point, there are a lot of questions that have to get answered," he said. "It's too soon to determine exactly what happened."

Emergency responders provided treatment at the scene, and the boy was taken to Manchester Memorial Hospital.

In a recorded message sent to parents, Superintendent Richard Kisiel asked for prayers for the boy's family and said support personnel would be available at the school for students.

In January, a 15-year-old boy drowned in a school swimming pool during a supervised swim class in neighboring East Hartford.

A high school football game that was scheduled for Wednesday between Manchester and East Hartford was postponed following the boy's death.
