In commemoration of Ghana?s 48th Independence Anniversary, the Ghanaian Community in Montreal, Canada, gathered for a super celebration bash at Center Le Manoir in Montreal?s West End on Saturday March 12, 2005. The large audience which included community members, representatives from the Nigerian, Guinean, Zambian, Bangladeshi and Caribbean communities were treated to an unforgettable evening of rich Ghanaian cultural displays.
Opening the evening?s show and exciting performances was a group of very talented young singers from the Ghanaian Community Seventh-Day Adventist Church known as The Heavenly Royals dressed in rich kente outfits. The group, led by Margaret Boachie-Fosu, did renditions of the Ghanaian and Canadian National Anthems and Ghana?s Cultural Anthem, Yen Ara Asase Ni and a number of their own compositions after which the audience gave them a standing ovation.
Leading the cultural exposition was a retinue of Asante Chiefs and Elders led by current head of the Asanteman Community in Montreal, Nana Osei Agyeman Opambour and his Queenmother Nana Dufie Ankrah. Their arrival was heralded by an exciting Adowa Dance performed by three young Asante girls led by fourteen year old Akua Awuku Adinkra, Shirler Boahene and Anastasia Boahene which held the audience spellbound.
Closing off the evening?s cultural exposition was the Ewe Cultural Troupe who treated the audience to some captivating dances from Ghana?s Volta Region. And the most exciting part of the evening?s event was a fashion show of Ghanaian textiles and designs put up six young Ghanaian women and three young men and directed by Marianne Lempogo.
