Ghanaians around the world would be celebrating Ghana's 53rd Independence Anniversary.
6th of March is a day of rememberance, fun, food and culture for Ghanaians. It is this day in 1957 that the world heard the famous declaration and quote by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President; "The Independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up to the total liberation of Africa" and "Ghana Your Beloved Country is free forever. On another occasion celebrating the independence; Rev. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remarked; "Free At last, Free At Last, Thank God Almighty, Ghana is Free At last" - April 24th, 2007 in Washington DC.
New York will be having its own celebration in honor of mother Ghana as the National Council of Ghanaian Associations(NCOGA) would be hosting Ghana's 53rd Independence Day Dinner/Dance celebration on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Armenian Center, located at 630 2nd Avenue (bet 34th and 35th Street on Second Avenue) in New York City.
This formal dinner/award night is a fundraiser in aid of 5 high school students who have excelled academically and are college bound. NCOGA is also in the process of acquiring a building to serve the needs of the Ghanaian Community.
In addition, NCOGA will recognize Council Member Diane Helen Foster of the 16th District in the Bronx for her support of Ghanaians and Africans in her district. Awards would also be given to outstanding individuals and organizations whose life and work have served to advance the interest of Ghana and Africa.
