Family Day, Health and Legal Expo 2010
*The Mother of All Picnics is coming so MARK IT IN YOUR CALENDAR as
it showcases Hot Ghanaian and Internationally Known Artistes**
NCOGA cordially invites fellow Ghanaians, Africans, the Diaspora as well as
friends of Ghana to its annual picnic, family Day, Health and Legal Expo at
the Roy Wilkins Park in Jamaica, Queens, New York on Saturday August 7,
2010, from 11:00 am to 6:30 pm. <
We are all aware that Mother Ghana has been in the news lately for what can
be summed up as positive press. As if you may not know already, we made
history again as the only African nation to advance to the group stage in
the first World Cup to be played on the African soil. That in itself is a
splendid achievement; our democracy is budding, the economy is beginning to
look up and recently Ghanaians making waves in the Big Apple were featured
in one of the local daily newspapers. We at NCOGA think these are great
achievements worth celebrating. It is in this spirit that we are investing
all our energy in planning for this year’s picnic and making it even more
successful as it has always been.
As usual, there will be a variety of activities and workshops showcasing
the cultural diversity of our homeland, the health, legal and educational
concerns within the Ghanaian community, as well as financial education and
investment information. Doctors on the Hudson and Ghanaian Nurses
Association will also be on hand to provide health information and free
screening to all.
Needless to say that in the area of sports, there will be exhibition games
from the various Ghanaian clubs, table tennis and tug of war competitions.
Awards would be presented to the winners.
On the culture front, there will be drumming and musical performances; from
Adowa to Borborbor and stilt dancing, traditional drumming meeting all
musical tastes. You can join in and learn some moves on the drums or the
dance floor. Then again you may just be surprised by the presence of some of
the most sought after Ghanaian and African artistes on the international
scene right now. There will also be vendors around to showcase their artwork
and sculptures for those able to learn more about their culture and other
cultures too.
No Ghanaian function is complete without the gastronomical diversity of
Ghana. There will be food from the various regions for all to sample and
enjoy. From "Waakye" through "Sooyah" to "Kenkey" and "Shitoh", more than
enough to whet the appetite for the most discriminating palate.
For those of you who have left home a long time ago and are no longer in
tune with developments back home, those who have never been there before,
and those who have just recently returned and are nostalgic, this picnic
will serve as the cure for your nostalgia and the snippet of what a great
place Ghana is. We are encouraging you to come out in your numbers to meet
old friends and make new ones.
*You might just meet and share a picture or story with a host of other
african movie celebrities. I would not miss this year’s event if I were you.
