US based NGO embarks on educational project for the deprived

Kumasi, Jan. 27, GNA - A multi-million cedi educational project to give free education to deprived rural children, has taken off at Abenkyim near Asante-Bekwai.

It is being funded by Alison Education Fund set up by His Children Foundation, a child welfare NGO in Wyoming in the United States. The package comes with free tuition, feeding and school uniforms. Pastor Francis Tuffour, President of the Foundation in Ghana told the Ghana News Agency that construction of school blocks for the basic school at Abenkyim form the phase one of the project. Children of school going age in the area and an Orphanage at Anwia Nkwanta would be enrolled in the school, beginning from next academic year. Pastor Tufuor said the Fund had already awarded scholarships to eight needy children in private basic schools, two senior high school students and one tertiary student.

"The gesture forms part of our efforts to complement government's efforts at giving decent education to the deprived in rural communities whose parents cannot afford to take them to high fee paying private schools," he said. He said he has been visiting a number of schools in the Bekwai Municipality to interact with teachers and children to assess their needs and pick more beneficiaries for the scholarship scheme. 27 Jan. 10
