Peter Mawuli Ekpe, a once-loyal member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Vice Chairman for the Nhyiaeso constituency, has announced his defection to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a video, Ekpe explained his decision to cross political lines ahead of the crucial 2024 elections, citing the impactful policies of the NPP as the turning point.

For Ekpe, the NPP’s Free SHS policy was a game-changer.

“I remember challenging them. I said if they could truly implement Free SHS, I would switch my allegiance,” he revealed.

True to his word, he now finds himself endorsing the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Dr. Bawumia’s vision for Ghana is what we need to move forward. His leadership is effective, and the results speak for themselves,” he added.

Ekpe’s connection to the NDC runs deep. As an Ewe raised in the Ashanti Region, he grew up in a family that revered the NDC.

His loyalty led him to dedicate years of service to the party, spearheading propaganda campaigns to defend their policies.

Reflecting on those years, he shared, “I defended the NDC even in the toughest times, like the dumsor crisis.

“My loyalty cost me dearly, including my film production business. But I stood by them because I believed in the cause.”

However, with time, Ekpe says his perspective shifted.

He observed the strides the NPP has made in governance, particularly their dedication to education and economic reforms.

“I couldn’t ignore the impact of the Free SHS program. It’s not just about promises; it’s about delivery,” he said.

He also commended the NPP for stabilizing the economy in challenging global conditions, contrasting this with what he described as the failures of the NDC under John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.
