Following the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) defeat in Ghana's December 7, general elections, several key figures within the party and beyond have openly criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership as a contributing factor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s loss to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
Bawumia who represented the NPP in the elections secured less than 42% of the total valid votes cast while Mahama garnered over 56% to win the elections.
Bawumia conceded defeat less than 24 hours after collation began following the close of polls.
After the NPP’s defeat, some concerned individuals are pointing fingers at the president, accusing him of having a hand in Bawumia’s defeat as a result of the perceived mismanagement of the country.
Here is a list of 8 individuals who have criticized the president.
1.Andy Appiah-Kubi
Outgoing MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, placed direct blame on President Akufo-Addo’s leadership decisions.
According to him, the President ignored calls from over 96 NPP MPs to dismiss former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, a move he believes undermined Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid.
“He [President Akufo-Addo] refused to listen to us, even when we saw the reality and tried to communicate it to him. He didn’t do enough to help Dr. Bawumia,” Appiah-Kubi said in an interview on Joy News.
2. Kwame A Plus
The MP-elect for Gomoa Central, Kwame A Plus, has also pointed fingers at President Akufo-Addo.
During an interview on Asempa FM, he described the 2024 election as a “protest vote” against the President’s leadership.
“Akufo-Addo caused Bawumia’s loss. The anger against him is the reason people voted against Bawumia. Why would you decide to tax sports betting? He must publicly apologize to the NPP and take responsibility because that’s what leaders do,” A Plus asserted.
3. Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah
Former Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant of the NPP, Oheneba Kofi Adum Bawuah, highlighted nepotism, cronyism, and greed as hallmarks of the Akufo-Addo administration.
He attributed the NPP’s poor performance, particularly in the Ashanti Region, to voter apathy caused by unfulfilled promises.
“The President’s administration has been characterized by greed and a focus on amassing wealth at the expense of ordinary citizens,” Adum Bawuah said on Accra 100.5 FM.
4. Eugene Boakye Antwi
Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi accused the President and his family of fostering arrogance and internal discord within the party.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, he accused the president saying, “The NPP’s defeat cannot be discussed without mentioning Akufo-Addo. He and his family alienated supporters and created a disconnect with the grassroots.”
5. Edward Ennin
Former MP for Obuasi East, Edward Ennin, has pointed to corruption and alleged practices under Akufo-Addo’s leadership as the cause of the NPP’s defeat.
“It had to do with the corruption that people were talking about, and the president wasn’t ready to do anything about it,” 3news.com quoted him to have said in an interview .
6. Obeng Takyi
MP for Manso Nkwanta, Obeng Takyi in an interview with Angel FM in Kumasi, added, “Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should apologize to Ghanaians on behalf of the NPP and accept the responsibility for the defeat because he is the one who handed over power to Bawumia.”
7. Nana Yaw Amponsah
The Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team in the USA admitted that President Akufo-Addo’s leadership contributed to the defeat.
“I think I have some issues with President Akufo-Addo in terms of how he handled our party, I think there was an element of his contribution to our defeat. People may be exaggerating it also but he contributed,” he said during a panel discussion on Okay FM’s Gyaso Gyaso with Afia Pokua.
8. Dr. Eric Bempong
A lecturer at Kaaf University, Dr. Eric Bempong, criticized the President for implementing unpopular policies such as the E-Levy and the betting tax, which Dr. Bawumia had opposed.
“The truth is that Nana Addo did not help Bawumia. One thing is that Nana Addo knew Bawumia did not agree with the E-levy and he said he would cancel it, so what should Nana Addo have done, just to scrape it? Same with the betting tax, it was worrying, so if he wanted Bawumia to win, he should have done the needful but he didn’t listen," he said on Oyerepa TV on December 12, 2024.
