The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has strongly condemned the recent National Security raids on former government officials, calling them an assault on democracy.
In a social media post on X, he expressed outrage over recent raids on former officials of Akufo-Addo.
He specifically criticised the raids on former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta's home in February, and former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr Ernest Addison's residence in March, which led to allegations of theft by security officials.
“Abusing the Rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Mr. President, you are widely perceived as a moderate, but these acts of abuse of power by your HAWKS… speak very negatively of your leadership. Please rein in your HAWKS now!” he wrote.
Afenyo-Markin urged President John Dramani Mahama to take action, stating that the raids tarnish his leadership and are a fundamental assault on democracy.
He also criticised Government Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, and Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, for defending the actions of the National Security.
The Minority Leader's concerns are part of a growing call for an independent investigation into the operations of National Security, with Civil Society Organizations raising concerns about the increasing politicization of security agencies.
In response to the criticism, National Security justified the raid on Dr Addison's residence, claiming they acted on a credible intelligence that he was storing cash belonging to the central bank in his home.
They insisted their actions were legal, having obtained a search warrant before conducting the operation.
