President Akufo-Addo erred in appointing Deputy IGP – Kofi Bentil

Kofi Bentil Kofi Bentil

Lawyer and Senior Vice President of policy think tank, the Imani Centre for Policy and Education (Imani Africa), Kofi Bentil argued that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo erred in appointing a Deputy Inspector General of Police(IGP) in Charge of Operations. He contended that even though the president is the appointing authority of the leadership of the police service, the appointment of a Deputy IGP is usually delegated.

For him, there is no provision for the appointment of a Deputy IGP in Charge of Operations in the law and therefore the president acted in error.

“In the Constitution, the president is the appointing authority for every officer but if you read further you will see that he delegates that,” Mr Bentil said Joy FM’s current affairs show Newsfile today, July 20, 2024.

He noted that the appointment of a Deputy IGP violates management systems and could undermine the authority of the IGP.

President Akufo-Addo recently appointed Commissioner of Police(COP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police(IGP) in charge of Operations. But the appointment has been met with criticism especially from the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC).
