The financial plight of Ghanaian actors in recent times have been a topic widely discussed on social media.

Videos have circulated and gone viral of veteran actors living very poor lives and depending solely on benevolent donations and welfare.

While many have blamed the actors for living lavish lifestyles and not making any proper investments whiles in their prime, others have blamed the lack of structures in the industry such as payment of royalties for the woes of these actors.

Ghanaian actor, Mikki Osei Berko, has joined the discussion on the state of Ghanaian actors and revealed that most Ghanaian celebrities are poor.

The veteran actor in a recent interview with Eugene Nkansah on ‘Konkonsa’ which was monitored by GhanaWeb claimed that 80 per cent of Ghanaian celebrities cannot afford decent healthcare and stressed that it was because they were paupers.

When he was asked if Ghanaian celebrities are poor, he also questioned where they get money from and what they did to earn money.

“About 80% of Ghanaian celebrities cannot afford decent healthcare…of course because they are paupers. Where do they get the money from? What do they do that gives them money?” he said.

Citing his own situation as an example, Mikki Osei Berko said “I am not a rich man and I served in an industry for 26 years and there shouldn’t be a point that I won’t have money to buy fuel for my car…it does happen”.

His comment confirms the many sentiments shared by other industry players that the entertainment industry in Ghana is not lucrative anymore.
