An award-winning Ghanaian music producer, David Kojo Kyei, widely known as Kaywa, has said that a lot of the songs regarded as gospel music are rather inspirational music, but people do not know.
In an interview on Y FM on December 24, 2024, Kaywa said that one of his saddest moments growing up was finding out that Lord Kenya had dropped the mic.
“I grew up in Kumasi on Lord Kenya’s music. I’ve said this on various platforms that Lord Kenya remains my favourite Ghanaian artiste. He’s been out of business for close to 15 years but one of my saddest moments growing up was finding out that Lord Kenya has dropped the mic because he found a path in the ministry of our Christ.
“Like I said, it’s the knowledge about the thing that you need and of course when you meet Jesus, you should understand that he’s not telling you to drop your circular music. Let me tell you this; when you become a believer, you have a primary objective to push the gospel. So, you become a personal rep for Jesus once you take up the cross of Jesus," he said.
He continued to explain that “You will not find a banker saying that I stopped working at the bank because I met Jesus, so, why are we facing that situation in music? It’s because of content, to say that when I met Jesus, I realised I didn’t have good content, let me change my content. If I’m singing about love, let me sing about love when children can even listen to love music from me and still keep the influence and have the numbers.
“I heard some man of God somewhere saying that you think God needs your numbers, he doesn't and I laughed. The Bible says that Jesus, it got to a time that because of his work, Jesus became exceedingly popular and because he was popular many followed him. Popularity is good, God uses our popularity to bring people to him, I call God the greatest businessman you can ever find. He needs to bring people back to civil knowledge and he will use us in every dimension. He will use what you have to work and so, God can use YFM to propagate the gospel. I don’t know why some Christians have become exceedingly religious where some things are okay and some things are not okay."
Kaywa also advised people that wherever they find themselves, they should let their light shine.
“We Christians are the ones to properly identify what circular music is and properly identify what gospel music is. There are many gospel artistes who are doing gospel music which are not gospel music but if you say it they will beat you. If you are a gospel artiste let your message talk about gospel,” he added.
