Being the last of Nescafe’s six zonal contests to hunt for young and enterprising musical talents, the Greater Accra edition that came off at Tema last Saturday was a big affair.
The large number of participants as well as teeming audience confirmed this. As has been the format for the regional shows, there was a two-day audition in Accra, where lots of groups trooped in to show their talents.
135 groups registered for the audition which preceded the main event but after they went through the various stages of the pre-event, the judges short listed eight out of the lot.
They comprised Mmrantepa, 3 Units, Asaase Yaa, MP’s, Zig Zag, Adikanfuor, Popcorn and Nkrapan. At the beginning of Saturday’s show, it wasn’t easy to tell which group would make it to the final since they all put up their best performances but at the end of the highly competitive and exhausting competition, two out of the eight groups sang their way to the judges score cards.
The two groups, Mmrantepa and 3 Units, will represent the Greater Accra zone in the national final scheduled to take place in November 26, this year.
During the main event, each group composed an accapella song about Nescafe products in the first round and performed another accapella of their choice in the second round, with the third round comprising of a rap performance over backing instrumentals.
Besides the performances of the contestants, the audience were treated to extra excitement when two hiplife musicians, Utah and Kwaw Kesse, mounted the stage in turns.
Their performances were received with loud cheers and dancing.
