In the recent defamation suit filed against Kwame A Plus, we examine the demands made by the plaintiff, former Deputy NPP Communications Director, Afia Akoto.

In the writ of summons issued on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Afia Akoto presented four reliefs she sought from the defendant, Kwame A Plus.

Through her legal representatives, she asserted that A Plus deliberately made statements aimed at damaging her reputation and causing public disaffection.

"Defendant’s statements have caused emotional and psychological distress to Plaintiff’s university-going children, adversely affecting their studies," noted her Statement of Claims.

"He made these statements for political gain, to bolster his social media following, and garner support for his parliamentary candidacy," Afia Akoto stated.

In that regard, the reliefs sought include:

i. Declaration that the statements in Defendant’s Facebook posts of July 12, 2024, specifically paragraphs 9 and 12 of the statement of claim, are defamatory to Plaintiff.

ii. GH₵5,000,000.00 (Five Million Ghana Cedis) in damages for defamation, including exemplary and punitive damages.

iii. A perpetual injunction restraining Defendant from further publishing or causing the publication of defamatory statements against Plaintiff.

iv. An order requiring Defendant to retract the defamatory statements about Plaintiff in the July 12, 2024, Facebook publications, accompanied by a public apology of equal prominence.

Background:

A Plus alleged that Afia Akoto attempted to initiate a romantic affair with Maxwell Mensah, the husband of popular actress Nana Ama McBrown.

He claimed Afia sent nude photographs to Maxwell in an effort to seduce him, which were ultimately not made public due to his intervention.

"Maame Afia Akoto, do you remember the photos of that old yellowish 'ɛtw kutu' you sent to Maxwell to beg him to come and eat, but he ran away because it was too scary? If you don't know Maxwell, I’m talking about McBrown's husband. But for me, McBrown would have finished you! I had to beg for you so that those pictures wouldn't come out to cause fear and panic in the country," he established in his Facebook post.

He further criticized Afia, accusing her of ingratitude, and warned her about the consequences of her actions.

“I spent days solving this problem only for you to turn around and be fooling. If I resend the photos to you, you’ll shout 'blood of Jesus!' Ungrateful fool! Love yourself more than your party. Choose your battles wisely, if not it will go over you! You haven’t seen a foolish man before?” he added.
