Agya Koo left Ghana an hour before arrest warrant was issued – GIS

The Ghana Immigration Service has described as incorrect, media reports suggesting that popular actor and comedian, Kofi Adu, cleverly beat immigration officials at the airport, after an arrest warrant was issued by a High Court in Accra.

The Court issued the warrant for the arrest of the comedian, for failing to show up in court for allegedly defrauding one Stephen Kwarteng of GHC 3,800 through false pretense.

The Daily Graphic on Friday reported that the comedian who is widely known as Agya Koo, managed to beat Immigration at the Kotoka International Airport and travelled to Abu Dhabi in Dubai, although the warrant for his arrest had been pasted at all exits of the country.

A statement issued on Friday by Mr. Francis Palmdeti, Head of Public Affairs at the GIS noted that, his outfit received the warrant for the arrest of Agya Koo at 5.30 pm on January 8, 2013, while records at the KIA indicates that the suspect left the country at 4.36 pm the same day.

“Documentary evidence from the Immigration Control at Kotoka International Airport [KIA] indicates that, the said warrant from the CID of the Ghana Police Service was received at 5:30 pm whiles the suspect left the country on Emirates Airlines at 4:36 pm. This implied that, the suspect had departed one hour before the warrant was handed over to the GIS/KIA.

“It is therefore incorrect to suggest that the said suspect ‘managed to beat Immigration at the Kotoka International Airport’.

“The GIS re-echoes its commitment to ensuring that the mandate of securing our borders is vigorously enforced."
